The government of Somalia, in collaboration with Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), has introduced the nation's first digital National Identity Card. This milestone was marked at the Somalia National ID Conference (SNIDC), hosted by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) under the Ministry of Interior, Federalism, and Reconciliation.
Somalia's Prime Minister Hamze Barre expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its support and praised NADRA's crucial role in implementing the National ID System and training NIRA personnel. This initiative, supported by a grant from Pakistan, aims to provide identification to 15 million people in Somalia over the next four years, with support from the World Bank and UNDP.
Nadra Chairman Asad Rehman Gilani highlighted the success of this collaboration, emphasizing its importance in achieving Somalia's National Identification System.
The Somalia National ID System, implemented by @NIRASomalia, is expected to enhance security and facilitate inclusive development, financial empowerment, and improved governance, as stated on a social media platform X. This initiative aligns with Pakistan's 'Look Africa' policy, where Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has been actively involved in providing secure identity and passport solutions through technology transfer to several African governments, including Kenya, Sudan, and Nigeria.
Chairman Gilani expressed gratitude to Somalia's president and prime minister for acknowledging NADRA's contributions to the successful completion of this project.
